Scoop Feedback: The Big "I AM"

Published: Wed 17 Apr 2002 11:55 AM
Sir,
The Prime Minister, in response to a question in the House (16 April) asking "Why does she think that accusing every other MP of art forgery will make her own less deceitful than it was?" responded with "I am making no such allegation but I do front up to my mistakes, I made a mistake and I let the matter rest there."
I am sure that every person convicted of crimes of any sort and presently languishing in prison will be heartened by this trite response from the leader of the country.
They can all now call for a retrial and rest their defence on the "point of law" made by Helen Clark that they "made a mistake and let the matter rest there".
Just who is this "I" the country allows to dismiss out of hand her flagrant disregard of things fraudulent while everyone else pays the price? The decision to "let the matter rest there" is not hers to make.
