New Wave Hermaphrodites

Published: Wed 11 Jul 2001 03:21 PM
Dear Editor,
A recent article reports that Australian researchers say they may have found a way to fertilise an egg with cells from any part of the body, rather than sperm, which theoretically could allow babies to be born without any input from men.
Such hermaphroditic tinkering with the reproductive processes could have extreme consequences for the human gene pool.
Laxity in this area is already causing deficient offspring through the acceptance of relationships between peoples of very close genealogy.
Furthering this dilution of the gene pool through the use of somatic cells from the non-reproductive parts of the carrier body is courting disaster of gargantuan proportions for the human race.
