Scoop Feedback: The President And Selfishness

Published: Mon 9 Apr 2001 09:53 AM
Dear Sir / Madam,
The President And Selfishness
The man with the murky smile, in the Oval office of the White House in Washington D.C. has shown his real colours.
He has repudiated the USA commitment to the Kyoto Protocol, which governs the protection of the environment and the decrease of global warming.
His argument is, that in case the USA would implement this protocol, the American economy will suffer too much.
In making this decision, he has clearly demonstrated that he is a lackey of American neo-capitalism (money, no love).
It is therefore not surprising, that he is also promoting to destroy Alaska's pristine landscape by producing petroleum and gas in that state.
Although he was born in a family of petroleum tycoons, he does not seem to be concerned about the continuous pollution by single-hull oil tankers of the beautiful beaches and islands all over the world.
The facts are that the USA, which has barely 5% of the world population, produces at least 25% of the greenhouse gases. The economy of the USA earns 30% , or 8.500 billion dollars (1998), of the annual global GDP.
It is a well known fact that many capitalists tend to be stingy.
The proof is that the USA spends less than 0.1 % of its annual national GDP for multilateral and bilateral aid to the poor countries. The goal of 0.7% of the annual national GDP to be paid by the rich countries, as recommended by the United Nations more than three decades ago, has only be achieved by France, the Scandinavian countries and The Netherlands.
It could be postulated that the deficiency of 0.6%, which amounts to 51 billion dollars for 1998, is partly at the cause of the precocious death of millions of people in the poor countries, who died because of hunger, disease, violence and other calamities. A lot of this human suffering could have been avoided if the USA had fullfilled its obligations to the UN goal.
