New book of poetry provides inspiration to those with mental illness
A new compilation of poems has been launched today to provide inspiration to people living with mental illness. The author, Luke Butler Taveta, is himself living with mental illness; formerly in the Army Officer Cadet Corps he suffered a nervous breakdown which cut short his career.
He went on to co found the Psychiatric Survivors Association, an organisation that supports members through advocacy and peer support, in 2004 and has been writing poetry for 20 years, mainly in handwritten form. This new book, entitled ‘Creative Expression’ is the first published compilation of his work; containing a selection of poems with subjects ranging from mental illness, romantic poetry and inspirational spiritual verse.
Speaking at the launch Luke said; “This shows that with the right attitude you can do anything, no matter what. I hope that this inspires others.”
The book was designed by Luke’s colleague, John Brookes, who said: “Much of his experience of mental illness is most effectively and vividly captured in his poetry with works that demonstrate his distinct, yet ever-changing style as a poet.
“But his poetry is much more than that, it also ranges from romantic poems to inspirational spiritual works and you will find a selection of all of these types in Creative Expressions; his first published collection. This mix, ultimately, creates a message of hope,,. of triumph over adversity.”
A second volume of verse, entitled ‘The Light’ is planned.
