Jude Mannion who launched and ran The Robin Hood Foundation New Zealand is now launching a world first health innovation
as a charitable trust here - and she says it just could be the worlds 'smartest piece of recycling'
How else does something that's thrown in our dumps – get to save a life ?
Her charity, The Pacemaker Trust , will see pacemakers sterilised, tested and if still good, save someone’s life in a
developing country . Recycled to save another life .
Currently in New Zealand used pacemakers are thrown into the landfill everyday. The main reason for this being is that
they have to be removed prior to cremation and legally we don't allow reuse here .
Mannion is looking for a sponsor for this innovative the trust which hopes to retrieve pacemakers across Asia Pacific
for reuse in developing countries.
"This is about as leading edge and innovative any charity could be, so I hope to hear from individuals or companies who
believe that's what they stand for "she said
The Pacemaker Trust will send our used pacemakers for testing and sterilising to the University of Michigan who have
spent the last 2 years working to send pacemakers to recipients in the Philippines, Pakistan, Ghana, Sierra Leone and
Nicaragua.
Mannion , who has successfully launched and run previous foundations here and internationally (Robin Hood Foundation NZ
and The Mekong Club Hong Kong - anti-slavery ) says she has partnered with the University of Michigan to be the
recipient of New Zealand and hopefully Australian and Asian Pacemakers.
And it's not expensive . She has several fund-raising options already prepared to support any investment .
"Most people in developing countries cannot afford a pacemaker and yet we throw them in the dump. They save lives. " she
