Auckland, NZ– Women pregnant with multiple babies (twins, triplets or more) is often discussed in medical terms as „high
risk pregnancies. The reality is multiple pregnancies do carry a higher risk factor including premature labour.
Even though multiple pregnancies are high risk, there are still no twin specific guidelines for how these multiple
babies should be growing in-utero.
New Zealand Multiple Birth Association is therefore pleased to support our UK counterpart TAMBA (Twins and Multiple
Birth Association UK) with their research appeal, The Beanstalk Appeal.
TAMBA has announced they wish to fund research into the study of twin growth patterns in the womb. This research will
produce the worlds very first evidence based twin pregnancy growth charts.
“We are very excited to support this appeal. This is a world first that can help to improve maternity care for both the
multiple babies and parents.” Carolyn Lister - President of the NZMBA.
The development of twin pregnancy growth charts will aid medical professionals worldwide to better compare growth rates
of our many multiples. Such charts will help prevent unnecessary premature deliveries, stillbirths and misdiagnosis
which in turn will ease the journey many multiple parents have previously taken.
TAMBA have released a video to further promote the Beanstalk appeal and have the experts explain why we need twin growth
pregnancy charts: http://youtu.be/m4NA4HpNGXg.
