Success for Smokefree sector
The substantial decrease in smoking rates across New Zealand is being hailed as a success of on-the-ground cessation and
public health work. Census data by Statistics New Zealand shows a reduction from 18.9% in 2006 to 13.7% in 2013. Te Ara
Haa Ora, the National Maori Tobacco Control Service is thrilled also to see a significant decrease in Maori smoking
rates. “The figures show a decrease of just over 10% for Maori. Cessation and public health workers across the country
can pat themselves on the back for their determination to support Smokefree whanau and the Smokefree 2025 goal” Says Mrs
Hawke of Te Ara Haa Ora.
Whilst the sector is thrilled about the decrease, figures show Maori smoking is double that of the general population.
“To reach the goal of a Smokefree Aotearoa New Zealand by 2025, there is much work to be done across environments,
taxation, cessation, prevention and protection of children from secondhand smoke. What’s more, if we want to make a dent
in cessation for hard core smokers, much intensive and innovative work is needed” says Mrs Hawke.
