Former Wairarapa Palliative Care Base to go on Market
Te Omanga Hospice today advised that it plans to sell its 48 Lincoln Road property in Masterton and has listed the property with Masterton real estate agents, Bayleys.
Biddy Harford, Chief Executive of Te Omanga Hospice said, “Palliative care services for the Wairarapa have been based at Lincoln Road for the last 12 years. However, with the move to Renall Street the property is now surplus to requirements and accordingly we have placed it on the market.”
Until recently, Wairarapa’s palliative care services were based at 48 Lincoln Road. In September ‘Kahukura’, the Wairarapa DHB-funded palliative service, joined with the Wairarapa Hospice Community Trust and has been based at the Trust’s property ‘Te Kowhai’, at 59 Renall St, Masterton. The Wairarapa DHB had leased 48 Lincoln Road for the past two years as a base for its Kahukura service.
While Te Omanga continues to have a role in the Wairarapa, palliative care services for the region are now managed and delivered jointly by Kahukura and Hospice Wairarapa. Following a review of palliative care services by the Wairarapa DHB in 2008, Te Omanga’s role changed to provide medical specialist cover only. Until that point, for almost 10 years Te Omanga had been the main provider of specialist palliative care services in the Wairarapa.
The Lincoln Road property was purchased in 1998 by Te Omanga Hospice Trust with the proceeds of a bequest to the Trust.
“While we won’t have a physical presence in the Wairarapa in future, under a contract with the DHB, a Te Omanga medical specialist visits Te Kowhai each week and we are available to GPs and other palliative care workers in the Wairarapa 24/7.
“The sale of this property marks the end of an era for Te Omanga in the Wairarapa and an acknowledgement of the fact our role has changed. While we retain an involvement and interest, the delivery of palliative care in the region is now in the hands of Wairarapa people.
“We would like to acknowledge the generosity of the many local people and organisations whose contribution assisted Te Omanga provide much needed care for terminally ill patients and their families in the Wairarapa,” Mrs Harford said.
