Finding Nutritional Support for Autism
A Study On Omega Fatty Acids
Autism, Asperger’s syndrome, ADHD, diabetes, depression – the chronic health conditions that our children might face in their lifetimes can seem daunting to many parents.
But many people don’t know that what they and their children eat may be contributing factors. For example, eating the wrong combination of essential fatty acids has been implicated in all these chronic health conditions.
With symptoms generally appearing by the age of 3, autism is a complex development disability that affects how the brain functions. Affected children have real difficulty communicating, interacting with others and even playing.
Treatments range from traditional to alternative, and many health professionals and families rely on a combination of many approaches to help affected children and relieve their symptoms. An effective programme can include changing children’s diets and adding fish oil supplements.
According to research, the most benefi¬cial EFAs (essential fatty acids) are the omega-3s EPA and DHA, and the unique and beneficial omega-6 fat GLA.
Louise Patrick is a licensed speech language pathologist, clinician, consultant and researcher who focuses on children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
Her clinical trial1 showed that supplementing with EFAs had a positive effect on the language and learning skills of children with Autism or Asperger’s syndrome. All of the children who completed the trial showed an improvement in their language and learning that could be scientifically measured.
In her trial, Patrick used a fish-oil-based essential fatty acid from Nordic Naturals that consisted of 225mg of Omega-3 (EPA and DHA), 33mg of Omega-6 (GLA) and 15 IU of Vitamin E.
Nordic Naturals fish oils are of the highest quality and all Nordic Naturals fish oils are in their natural triglyceride form*, which is the optimum form for the body to absorb and use.
And to please even the fussiest eater, Nordic Naturals fish oils also taste great. They surpass all international standards for purity and freshness – meaning no fishy taste or aftertaste and no toxins or environmental contaminants.
Experts recommend healthy children need the following amounts of EPA and DHA – every day:
• Infants 1 to 18 months 32 mg of EPA+DHA/kg of weight
• Children 1.5 to 15 years 15 mg of EPA+DHA/lb of weight
• Older Teens 15 + years 500 mg EPA+DHA with a min of 220 mg of each
