FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Disability Expo a first for Christchurch.
For the first time ever Christchurch will be hosting its very own Disability Information Expo next Wednesday – and according to organisers, it could not have come sooner.
Taking place in the Canterbury Horticultural Society Hall, the “Living Life My Way - Disability Information Expo” will feature informative displays from around 30 organisations throughout Canterbury, as well as giveaways and prizes.
The expo has been planned by two local disability service providers – IDEA Services (Intellectual Disability Empowerment in Action) and Lifelinks – and organisers are looking forward to a big turn out after the doors open at 10am.
According to Christine Fraser, Area Manager for IDEA services the expo will play an important part in reaching out to people who may be missing out on vital services; “Many people with disabilities and their families are unaware of the range of services and support at their fingertips.”
“I have come across people who have no idea about the financial aid available to them, as well as services such as the Kiwiable card. They might be missing out on discounted events and community activities too – there’s just so much out there!”
Sally Thompson, of Idea Family/Whanau, agrees; “As people’s lives change, so do their needs. Even in small ways, these agencies can cater to those needs and help people with disabilities to lead ordinary lives.”
