Cuts in beds and staff not the answer to Gisborne Hospital’s financial woes
“More funding from the Ministry of Health, not cuts in bed numbers or staffing levels is the answer to Gisborne
Hospital’s financial troubles,” said Margaret Takoko, PSA Organiser responsible for Gisborne Hospital in response to a
discussion document released by Hospital management aimed at cutting costs.
The paper suggests a series of amalgamations of wards within the hospital but does not present a comprehensive business
case for any of the proposals.
“The proposals aim to find a quick-fix solution to the financial troubles of the hospital and do not take into account
construction costs, the impact on patients and the high cost of losing skilled and experienced staff.”
“The proposed ward amalgamations have already been tried and failed during the 1990s, often at high cost.”
The PSA has made a submission to the hospital outlining concerns with the proposals and suggesting that more robust
proposals which ensure the safe delivery of services should be developed.
“We are hopeful that the hospital will take our concerns seriously and agree to work with us to develop proposals which
do not compromise safety, patient care or result in cuts in much needed clerical and nursing staff,” said Margaret
Takoko.
The PSA is New Zealand’s largest union representing over 55,000 members in health, central and local government and in
community services. The PSA represents more than 200 members at Gisborne Hospital, mainly clerical and administration
staff.
