Excellence in Health Information Management
The 2006 Sharing Excellence in Health and Disability Information Management Awards is now in its fourth year of
recognising outstanding contributions to health information management.
Four projects are approved each year and celebrated at an awards presentation held at the annual Health Informatics New
Zealand (HINZ) Conference in August. The awards are given to recognise innovative and successful management of health
information to improve health outcomes.
"We've acknowledged twelve great projects in the first three years of administering these awards, each one demonstrating
important benefits to the health and disability sector," says Debbie Chin, Acting Director-General of Health.
"Initiatives rewarded in the past are ones that improve access to health information, increase connectivity between
users of this information and help make smart investments in health information management. Ultimately, these
initiatives save lives. Health information technologies still show a lot of potential for better meeting the needs of
health care providers and patients and so we want to find out where this potential is being realised and share their
stories too."
The Ministry of Health, in partnership with Health Informatics New Zealand (HINZ) is now receiving applications from
organisations or individuals from across both public and private sectors.
An advisory committee of Ministry of Health and HINZ members will review each application. Projects will be assessed on
their ability to show benefits to the health and disability sector, the degree and transferability of innovation, the
level of competency demonstrated and cost-effectiveness of the project. The top four projects will be publicised as case
studies in a booklet that will be distributed to the wider sector.
