The General Practice Leaders Forum has acknowledged the achievements of former Health Minister Annette King during her six-term.
In a statement today, the forum said:
The General Practice Leaders Forum today acknowledged the achievements of former Health Minister Annette King in reshaping the face of primary health care in New Zealand.
Her commitment to implementing the New Zealand Primary Health Care Strategy has given general practice the opportunity to contribute to a significant reshaping of the delivery of primary healthcare, the forum said. The Government, through Ms King, has invested heavily in Primary healthcare and many New Zealanders now pay less to consult their GP.
By encouraging a team approach, Ms King increased the range of services that are now offered at local level. Rural Health in particular has benefited from the policies Ms King set in place during her term.
The General Practice Leaders Forum also welcomed incoming Minister of Health Pete Hodgson and Associate Ministers of Health Damien O’Connor, Mita Ririnui and Peter Dunne.
The forum comprises the Chairs of the GP Council of the New Zealand Medical Association, the Independent Practitioners Association Council (IPAC) the Rural General Practice Network, the President of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, and the chief executives of the four organisations
