Ceremony Of Remembrance
On Sunday (27 February), there will be a special public ceremony of remembrance starting at 2pm at Christchurch
Anglican Cathedral acknowledging special events that have happened at Christchurch Women’s Hospital over the last 53
years. It is one of a number of events and activities that have been planned as part of the move from the current
Colombo Street site of the hospital to its new site on the Christchurch Hospital campus.
Organiser, CDHB Chaplain Hilary Barlow said the service was a commemoration and a celebration.
‘The move from the current site to the new Christchurch Women’s Hospital in Riccarton Avenue has brought back many
memories for staff and friends of the hospital, and the ceremony is an opportunity for people to remember,’ she said.
‘Over the lifetime of the hospital, patients, families and staff have experienced many life-changing events. The memory
of these experiences can be very powerful. The ceremony will be a way of honouring and respecting people’s memories.’
Rev Barlow said there would be a formal ceremony from 2pm to 2.45pm followed by a half hour period when people could
remember, reflect and light a candle in honour of their memory. The gift of a memory box will be offered to people
attending the ceremony.
The ceremony has been organised by the Christchurch Women’s Hospital Chaplain and staff with assistance from some of the
many organisations who support the hospital.
