Pounding The Pavement For Charity
Runners, joggers and walkers will set off on a mission to raise money for the proposed Bay of Plenty cancer centre this
month.
The Bay of Plenty Times Charity Half Marathon, which includes three short distance fun runs and walks, will kick off on
November 14 from Maxwell Road in Tauranga.
A Community Sport Trust event, the half marathon will be a massive fundraiser for Project Hope, the proposed Bay of
Plenty district cancer centre.
Organiser Iris Thomas anticipates more than 1000 people taking part in either the 21.1 kilometre half marathon or the
3km, 5km or 10km fun events.
"More serious athlete can give the half marathon a go, while others might like to get a group of friends together to
walk the 5km distance. Parents could stride out with pushchairs or elderly people with their walking sticks. The fun
runs have nothing to do with serious competing and everything to do with being active and raising money for a great
cause," Iris says.
The half marathon course runs though the Matua area, covering some of Tauranga's most scenic and beautiful areas. It
also takes in the waterfront and five council reserves. Other courses run along Harbour Drive and, depending on the
distance, Kulim and Fergusson parks.
Asics are co-sponsoring the event, along with the local daily paper, and have donated $2500 of product as spot prizes
including running gear, a tent and camping equipment, tennis gear and heart rate monitors.
The major spot prize is $1000 in cash.
