Filming Goes Ahead on Organ Donor Commercial
After months of planning, work, and copyright problems, award winning film maker and teenage cancer victim Cameron Duncan Started the filming of a TV commercial on organ donor awareness this week.
The concept of the commercial revolves around the public perception of everyday real life 'heroes', those people who put their lives on the line to protect us and save lives. The commercial shows that by being an organ donor, 'ordinary' people can also be 'heroes' by saving the lives of up to seven people.
Figures just released show the projected figures of organ donors in New Zealand for this year are at just 9.49 donors per million people. Giving New Zealand the position as lowest in the civilised world for the amount of donors that it has.
Organ Donor Reform Campaigner, Andy Tookey was on the film set to watch the filming of the first scenes.
"As ticking 'donor' on your driving licence means nothing, as your licence is not checked in the event of your death, and even if it was, it is your family that decides wether you are going to be a donor or not... not you, the commercial carries the simple message of "talk to your family, tell them what your wishes are." We hope this commercial will help raise public awareness into the shortage, and encourage people to do just that." He said.
Duncan and Tookey have had the full support of Lord of the Rings Director, Peter Jackson in this worthwhile cause, offering advice and facilities if and when needed.
The commercial will be entered into the Fair Go Ad Awards in a few weeks time. "I really want to win this one" Cameron said. "it's about promoting organ donation, so if I win it's good for me and it's good for people needing organs."
