Transit Advises Motorists To Avoid State Highway 16 North Of Helensville
Transit New Zealand is advising all road users to avoid State Highway 16 between Wellsford and Helensville as the road has been closed due to flooding at Kaukapakapa.
Regional Asset Manager Philip Sutton says that because the detours have also had to be closed there is no way through SH16 until further notice. Further updates on the closure can be obtained from the AA at 0900 33 222 or www.nzaa.co.nz.
Mr Sutton says that many southbound motorists have been turning off State Highway 1 at Wellsford and onto State Highway 16 to avoid delays brought about by a number of slips between Wellsford and Orewa.
“It is better to take State Highway 1 with its delays than to go down State Highway 16 and find that you are brought to a complete standstill,” he says.
Mr Sutton adds that contractors are working hard on clearing the slips on SH1 and have already removed the biggest – on Johnson’s Hill south of Puhoi – which was causing the largest hold-ups throughout the morning.
