New Zealand produces scientists and researchers of the highest international standard. They are our intellectual
powerhouse for the future and major contributors to the further development of New Zealand’s reputation for smart ideas
and ground-breaking technology. The FiRST Awards, presented annually since 1999 by the Foundation for Research, Science
and Technology, applaud the way our researchers and scientists are using their ideas to help grow the New Zealand
economy and improve the social and environmental well being of all New Zealanders.
2002 Award Highlights
- The national award will be presented to one of New Zealand’s top up-and-coming scientists or researchers at a
prestigious event in Auckland on 20 June.
- The awards will again be judged by the CE of Te Papa, Dame Cheryll Sotheran and the CE of Aoraki Corporation, Sir Gil
Simpson
- Scientists and researchers from around New Zealand will gather at seminars before the South and North Island Awards
ceremonies to strengthen partnerships between science and business for the benefit of New Zealand
What All fellows and scholars currently funded to do research by the Foundation can enter the FiRST Awards. Their
research is presented in an eye-catching, information-packed poster, which clearly explains their work to a lay
audience. There are North and South Island winners and one national winner.
When The South Island winner will be announced at a function in Christchurch on Wednesday 12 June. The North Island
winner and the national award winner will be announced at a function in Auckland on Thursday 20 June
