Beekeepers' Support Call For Independent Review Of Biosecurity
The National Beekeepers' Association supports Federated Farmers' call for an immediate independent review of New Zealand's biosecurity.
"As an island nation, New Zealand must have the best biosecurity protection measures available for both economic and ecological stability. Failure to do so is grossly neglectful to the agricultural sector now, and to future generations," said NBA President Richard Hatfield today.
"MAF have assured us for several years that biosecurity is under control, but the ongoing and almost regular incursions of unwanted organisms shows that there are definite gaps in our systems that need filling."
"Without strong border protection we will not have a productive sector, nor will our unique ecology survive in it's natural state for our grandchildren."
"An independent review will help point out the weak spots and show the Minister and her officials where to place resources," continued Mr Hatfield.
"All of New Zealand stands to suffer if we do not strengthen our border controls immediately. The Government must act now and appoint an independent panel to review procedures and systems before it is too late."
"Beekeepers in particular have little faith in the current processes and demand urgent action. The Government must decide what its priorities are."
