Red Cross NEWS RELEASE:
Kiwis have so far donated approximately $80,000 to the New Zealand Red Cross appeal for flood-ravaged Mozambique, in
southern Africa.
However, further assistance is still needed as a run of bad weather is providing no let-up for the affected people in
Mozambique and neighbouring countries, or for relief efforts.
Mozambique was hit by devastating floods in February and early March, with about 700 people killed and hundreds of
thousands displaced. Since that time, the country has been struck by two tropical cyclones, causing further deaths and
displacement. A third cyclone was expected to lash Mozambique today (Wednesday).
“The support from the New Zealand public has, once again, been fantastic,” said NZRC spokesman Tony Blackett. “However,
the string of cyclones means that the situation is still serious. The last thing the affected people need is more rain.”
