The Land Transport Safety Authority is asking motorists to take extra care on the roads with children returning to
school on Monday after their summer holiday.
The Director of Land Transport Safety, Reg Barrett, says that the increased volume of pedestrian and cycle traffic,
especially around schools, means that motorists will need to be extra vigilant.
“The only tears at the school gate should be from parents waving good bye to their children as they head to class,” Mr
Barrett said today.
“Don’t let a school day be a tragic day.”
Mr Barrett said motorists had to accept extra responsibility around schools.
“Children can be unpredictable and the best way to guard against tragedy is to keep your speed down, and your attention
focused.
“Watch out for school patrols, follow their directions and be patient.”
Mr Barrett said motorists should not just alter their behaviour outside schools, but should be alert to safety issues at
all times.
Children are often impetuous, and though the message to them is to cross at marked crossings and to watch closely for
oncoming traffic, motorists too have an obligation.
“Avoid distractions and you’ll avoid disasters,” Mr Barrett said.
