Three new school teams are set to hit the courts at next month’s NZ Secondary Schools Netball Champs (NZSS) but will need to find something special to end Mount Albert Grammar School’s reign.
The Auckland school has been competing at the national event for 13 consecutive years having won the last four titles.
It will be up to 15 other schools to end that run when they come together at the Walter Nash Stadium in the Hutt Valley from October 4-7.
The leading teams from the Upper North Island, Lower North Island and South Island will go head-to-head in one of the most hotly contested annual tournaments on Netball New Zealand’s calendar.
Three of those sides are taking part for the first time including St Hilda’s Collegiate from Dunedin where former Silver Ferns’ manager Jackie Barron has taken over as principal.
St Hilda’s is ranked number one from the South Island Secondary Schools while other newcomers Aorere College and Rotorua Girls’ both hail from the Upper North Island.
Others returning after an absence include Palmerston North Girls’ for what will be their 13thappearance at NZSS while St Mary’s College is back to attend their 10th national event.
NZSS has been a key stepping stone for a number of Silver Ferns including current captain Katrina Grant, Laura Langman, Kayla Cullen, Grace Rasmussen and Maria Tutaia.
Bay of Islands College won the first ever NZSS event in 1993 while MAGS has the most titles having won the tournament on five occasions.
New Zealand Secondary Schools 2016 finalists:
South Island – St Hilda’s Collegiate, Marlborough Girls, St Andrews College, Southland Girls’ High School, St Margaret’s College.
Lower North Island – St Mary’s College, Manukura, Palmerston North Girls, Wellington East Girls, Wellington Girls’ College.
Upper North Island – Mt Albert Grammar, Saint Kentigern College, Rotorua Girls, Epsom Girls Grammar, Aorere College, Baradene College.
ENDS.
