St Cuthbert’s student receives top NZQA Award
The only female to win the top prize in the NZQA Scholarship examinations is St Cuthbert’s graduate Phoebe Clifford.
Close to 11,000 high school students sit Scholarship and of these 10 receive a Premier Award. This year Phoebe was the only girl to be awarded this prestigious prize, worth up to $30,000 for her four Outstanding Scholarships in Biology, English, Geography and History and a Scholarship in Chemistry.
She also won an Academic Excellence Scholarship from Otago University, where she will study a Bachelor of Laws and Arts conjoint degree.
Phoebe’s classmate Natalia Chen also received a top honour for her Scholarship examinations; a National Outstanding Scholar award. Natalia also received an International Baccalaureate Top Scholar award for her 40+ result. She will begin a Bachelor of Science (Biomedical) at University of Auckland this year.
National Outstanding Scholar awards are given to the top 60 students nationwide. St Cuthbert’s students have been among the recipients for this award every year since 2005.
Nine other St Cuthbert’s students received National Scholarship awards (15% of the awards available nationally), including Catherine Zheng – a very impressive result for a Year 12 student.
In total, St Cuthbert’s students from both NCEA and IB gained 93 scholarships, with 16 at Outstanding Scholarship level.
St Cuthbert’s NZQA Scholarship Results:
• 1 Premier Award (2nd in NZ, 1st female in NZ)
• 1 National Outstanding Scholarship Award
• 9 National Scholarship Awards
• 93 Scholarships, with 16 achieved at Outstanding level
