The New Zealand Singing School: Te Wānanga Toi Waiata is pleased to announce its first ever sponsorship. A first, second and third prize of $500, $300 and $100 respectively are being provided for the Vocal Recital Class at the Napier Performing Arts Competition 2012. The prizes are being sponsored by the national singing school in order to foster excellence in singing, and were just in the nick of time to prevent the class being dropped from the competition due to lack of sponsorship funding.
“It’s the first time we’ve looked at supporting and encouraging singers outside our own school but it reflects the direction we’re going in as an organisation, which is geared at encouraging and enabling New Zealand singers to achieve the highest standards” says Trust Chair Eileen von Dadelszen.
The Napier Performing Arts Competition is held over Easter, and the programme includes vocal, instrumental, speech and dance classes. This Easter Festival will mark the Society’s 104th competition, and is a very popular competition for competitors throughout the North Island. There are a huge range of cups, scholarships and financial prizes for competitors from as young as 5 years old. The Aria contest is a well known and hotly contested competition within the vocal classes.
$900 worth of prize money may seem a small amount to some, but the New Zealand Singing School is a not-for-profit organisation which seeks sponsorship and grants in order to host its own school in Hawke’s Bay every two years. However, the New Zealand Singing School Trust is keen to see the development of New Zealand singers and to encourage students to train and compete in the discipline of singing.
17 singers have entered the Vocal Recital Class, which is an increase on previous years, thanks to the provision of these prizes from the New Zealand Singing School. The Trust wishes all competitors the best of luck for the Festival which starts Thursday 5th April at the Municipal Theatre in Napier.
