Carpentry Programme Coordinator Brett Tickner swapped his hammer for tongs at UCOL Wairarapa’s Cookery programme
relaunch on Labour weekend.
Brett was one of several volunteers who assisted celebrity chef Al Brown during his outdoor cooking demonstration at the
Masterton campus. He says he thoroughly enjoyed his duties at the Barbeque, describing the day as a “ripper”.
“It was all high energy stuff and it was fun to be a part of it,” says Brett.
A keen cook, Brett was very impressed by Al’s lively and inspiring demonstration in front of a capacity crowd. “Al was a
real cool dude.”
As he cooked, Al talked about the many opportunities that he had taken advantage of, as a result of his career in
hospitality.
UCOL Wairarapa Campus Manager Angela Hewitt says, “The day was fabulous. We had a great turn out from the community and
both the morning and afternoon sessions were full.
It is crucial however, that local support is reflected in enrolments so that we are able to offer the Certificate in
Professional Cookery in Semester 1 and the Certificate in Baking and Pastry in Semester 2.”
