In remembrance of Brian Donnelly
Barnardos New Zealand is saddened at the death of former New Zealand First MP and child advocate Brian Donnelly.
Chief Executive Murray Edridge said today, "Brian's death is a great loss for New Zealand children and teachers. He was a great voice for children within Parliament."
Brian was elected to parliament in 1996 at the first MMP election. As a former school principal he made a significant contribution on issues affecting children and worked constructively with MPs in all political parties.
From an early stage he supported the repeal of Section 59 of the Crimes Act. He understood that children have the right to the same legal protections from assault as any other citizen has. He demonstrated great strength and integrity on this issue.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Brian's family", concluded Mr Edridge.
