“e-Waste Eddie” teaches Kiwi Kids how to help the Planet for World Environment Day.
What: As part of (and funded by) The United Nations World Environment Day, and in association with eDay, New Zealand’s
only national e-waste recycling day, e-Waste Eddie the puppet and the eDay collection truck will be visiting Brooklyn
School as part of a tour around selected Wellington Schools. The purpose is to educate children about the dangers of
e-waste and the importance of energy conservation while at the same time providing a convenient collection method for
schools to recycle their old computer equipment. This diverts potentially dangerous waste from landfills while at the
same time allowing the recovery and reuse of valuable metals and other materials.
When: Wednesday 4 June
9:15 am - 10:15 am
Where: Brooklyn School
58 Washington Ave
Brooklyn
Wellington
Who is attending?
Hon. Trevor Mallard to be confirmed
Laurence Zwimpfer, Chair Computer Access New Zealand Trust, National eDay Coordinator
Brooklyn School Associate Principal Liz Rhodes
400 students (ages 5 to 12)
e-Waste Eddie and Edutainer Tony Collis
Why: School eDay aims to increase awareness of the hazardous nature of electronic equipment, making it clear that
disposal in landfills is not a sustainable option. It provides a convenient mechanism for schools to recycle computer
equipment and mobile phones in an environmentally sustainable manner.
The schools’ tour aims to spread this message to students who in the future will benefit from good environmental
practices today. Every school in Wellington will be provided with downloadable schools’ kits that contain activities for
students to learn about sustainable e-waste disposal and IT energy conservation. The eDay collection truck will travel
with e-Waste Eddie visiting selected schools during World Environment week to entertain, educate, and collect school
e-waste.
School eDay is part of the national eDay programme which last year diverted 415 tonnes of e-waste from landfills, from
Invercargill to the North Shore of Auckland. This year, eDay for the general public will take place in October.
