Adding Mexican Flavour to WelTec Melting Pot
WelTec is hosting three top students from the prestigious CESSA Institution cookery school in Mexico City for the next
month.
Stephen Pope, Programme Leader for Cookery at WelTec was a judge for the CESSA Institution’s Chef competition held in
April. Stephen was invited to attend at the request of New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and the New Zealand Embassy in
Mexico City.
Twenty-six teams of three students from CESSA were asked to create a Mexican -New Zealand Fusion dinner for ten people.
Now, WelTec is hosting the three winning students during their stay in New Zealand.
On Thursday 23 June, WelTec students will re-create the Mexican – New Zealand Fusion menu for the visitors and give them
a taste of kiwi hospitality at the same time. The Mexican Ambassador, Angelica Arce, will attend the event along with
Christine Bogle, Deputy Director of the Americas Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Stephen is excited about the visit and hopes this will be the beginning of a long term relationship with the CESSA
Institution, “As a judge for CESSA, I was able to learn new ways of doing things myself and bring back this knowledge
for our students at WelTec. I am delighted to host these students at WelTec and to reciprocate the great hospitality.”
Kay Nelson, Head of the Centre for Hospitality and Tourism Professionals, is also looking forward to a long-term
relationship with the CESSA Institution, “WelTec is building a recipe for both national and international success. We
already have a tutor and student exchange agreement with the Les Sorbet Culinary School in France. Our link with CESSA
is also fantastic for both education providers – sharing not only a fusion of cuisine from both countries but also of
teaching and learning methods.”
