Primary teachers proposed settlement good news - NZSTA
The New Zealand School Trustees Association is welcoming the primary school teachers’ proposed settlement.
New NZSTA President Chris Haines says the proposed collective employment agreement comes with a package of proposals to
investigate teachers’ workload, examine career pathways and raise the quality of teaching and the teaching workforce.
“I am delighted that this will see the Ministry of Education, the NZEI and primary teachers take the very constructive
step to look at long-term improvements which will have significant benefits to all students.”
“With the recent settlement of the secondary teachers’ agreement for a similar term it looks like we can now focus on
positive ways forward to enhance the quality of education to be delivered to our students.”
“Our members will see this proposed settlement as a constructive way forward. It gives the industry the chance to deal
with important issues like the quality of the primary teaching profession in a positive environment. The parties are to
be congratulated.”
Chris Haines says the proposed settlement charts a new course, which is based on protecting the value of teachers’
salaries while enabling work programmes to be undertaken over the term of the agreement.
The NZSTA will be involved in a number of work programmes with the Ministry of Education and the NZEI as a result of
this settlement. A key goal is to ensure boards of trustees have highly capable primary teachers to lift achievement for
all students.
