New Alternative Education Project in Wellington!
Hello from the DIY Education Network,
We are a newly formed network of Wellingtonians that aims to stimulate and empower people to take an active role in
educating themselves and others. To kick-start our project, we are having an open workshop weekend on Saturday 7th and
Sunday 8th of August, all day and into the night.
We are extending an invitation to every person that is passionate about something to facilitate free workshops, from
poetry, computer design and bicycle maintenance, to political philosophy or graffiti art - anything goes, as long as it
is offered for free and open to all.
To make the workshops as enjoyable and rewarding as possible, we challenge those who take on a role as facilitator to
keep workshops free from sexism, racism, elitism and stress.
These are not expected to be finely tuned, well practiced sessions - simply spaces in which people can meet, share their
skills, ideas and knowledge with one another.
We will provide rooms and resources free of charge for all workshops. We have various spaces available over three sites
– a small workshop with assorted tools, three comfy meeting rooms, a bicycle workshop and Internet shop with 14
computers - as well as a data projector and AV equipment. All three sites are close to Wellington's inner city - Mt
Cook, Cuba Mall's Left Bank and Abel Smith Street.
The process for setting up a workshop, class or discussion group is as follows:
Send us your idea for a workshop, class or discussion group, along with your contact details, resources you may need and
your available/preferred time and day to openworkshops@gmail.com. These should be sent to us no later than the 26th of
July.
After finalising a timetable for the weekend, we will then print, paste and handout fliers and posters advertising the
weekend.
We are expecting that some of the groups formed for the weekend may wish to continue into the future. We encourage this
and hope to provide support for any groups that decide to do so.
