Gold Medals in Nestle Toque d’Or!
WelTec won three gold medals in this premier national competition covering both cookery and restaurant service skills.
The competition is by invitation only between 12 New Zealand’s leading tertiary training providers.
The team were:
Elizabeth Thompson – chef (Island Bay, Wellington)
Luke Crawford – chef (Lyall Bay, Wellington)
Joshua Pointon – restaurant service (Eastbourne)
Gold medal in Table Setting, Clearing, and Crumbing Down (Junior)!
Competitors have 30 minutes to complete a standard full Table d’ Hote restaurant setting of four covers including the
preparation of a bud flower arrangement and a serviette fold, and then 15 minutes to clear the table and prepare it for
a sweet.
*Elleanna Lupo - restaurant service (Wainuiomata) won a gold medal and first in class in this event. Elleanna also won a
gold medal in the Wine and Beverage Service (Junior).
Gold medals in Classic Cocktail (Junior)!
Competitors produce a Vodka Martini and one of either a Cosmopolitan, Margarita, or Bloody Mary.
*Laura McChesney – restaurant (Maungaraki) won a gold medal and first in class. Laura also won a gold medal in the Wine
and Beverage Service (Junior) and has been chosen to compete in the Trans Tasman Trophy competition in Australia in
October.
*Shannon Halligan (Stokes Valley) also won a gold medal.
Medals in NZ Professional Waiter of the Year Open Class!
This is a series of five competitions open to all waiters in New Zealand (not only a student class). Only eight
competitors in the country make it through to the second day of competition, where they will have displayed professional
customer service skills complemented with a superior range of technical skills and knowledge.
*Jarrod Brown (Wairarapa) won four medals in the five competitions (three silvers and one bronze).
*Joseph Owen (Lower Hutt) won two silver medals in the five competitions.

WelTec tutor Janene Fuge won 3 silver medals in the Chef of the Nation competition.
Gold Medal in Patisserie Confectionery Showpieces!
WelTec tutor Pauline Nunns won a gold medal and first in class in the Patisserie Confectionery Showpiece.
