Cipher Magazine Launched In Competition With Craccum
CIPHER MAGAZINE LAUNCHED IN COMPETITION WITH CRACCUM
The first issue of Cipher, the new student magazine at the University of Auckland, will be distributed free of charge around the campus on Monday, the 15th of October. Cipher will be published weekly throughout summer, unlike its main rival Craccum. Cipher has an initial print run of 3000.
Editor Max Fookes, a former contributor to Craccum, says the magazine is a response to the churlish and attention-seeking antics of Craccum recently. “I think that the student population of Auckland University deserves better. Craccum is a childish, attention-seeking, irresponsible boys' club. We are excited that after so long, an alternative was finally being offered."
Cipher is not the first to compete against the official student magazine of a University. At Victoria University this year, a group of intrepid students launched their own magazine, Lucid, because they felt unrepresented by their official magazine, Salient. Lucid has been in publication since March.
Fookes says that the biggest priority will be to get a large volunteer database and to establish Cipher as a magazine in its own right. Fookes says he is “confident” that Cipher will catch a toe- hold in the exciting student media market.
