Parents urged to have a say on sex education – NZSTA
New Zealand School Trustee Association is reminding boards and parents that they still have a say in what is taught to
their children, in light of the Government’s announcement that sex education will be compulsory in schools.
NZSTA president Chris France says the new legislation formalises what is already happening in a lot of schools, and it
is pleasing that flexibility is still being retained.
“While it will be compulsory for schools to work within the framework as set down by the Government, there is the
flexibility for boards to make decisions based on what is appropriate in terms of curriculum for their school community
and beliefs.”
Chris France says it is pleasing the Minister of Education Trevor Mallard has made it clear that parents will be fully
consulted on what is taught to their children, with full consultation being held every two years.
He is urging parents to make sure they take up the opportunity to have a say.
“This is what the whole concept of self-management is all about – schools deciding what it best for their school
community. The Government has acknowledged the valuable role that parents play within their school, so it is vital we
all take up the chance to have a say and have direct input into our children’s education.”
Chris France says the announcement highlights the importance of parents taking an active role in their children’s
education, and the fifth trustee election being held next March provides the opportunity. Nominations open on February
28, and the common election date is March 30.
