Auckland, New Zealand, May 1 - On the 25th of May 2019 members of the Auckland African community will be celebrating the 56th anniversary of the
African Union. Established in 1963 the Union’s purpose is to celebrate the achievements of African communities globally.
In Auckland, the annual event will be hosted from 11am to 6pm at Mt Roskill Youth Zone. This year the event’s focus is
on sharing the lived experiences of the community and dedicated rooms at the Youth Zone will feature profiles of
community members. Entertainment will be provided by some of New Zealand’s top African talent including Unchained XL,
Ammonation affiliated rappers Blaze and Mo Muse and the drummers from Black Sunday.
In addition to being able to purchase craft, jewellery, art and clothes from independent retailers, attendees will have
the opportunity to learn how to make beaded jewellery. Workshops that will be open to the public as part of the
celebration include a photography session and a chance to learn how to record vocals.
Funded and supported by Pamoja, Auckland Council, Lottery and Creative Communities this year’s celebration will have an
array of dishes from Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe including desserts and a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony.
