CHARMIAN HUGHES: WHAT-NOT
What-Not: a word for things overlooked and abandoned
What-Not: a set of shelves for all your what-nots
What-Not: the word for people there isn’t a word for
What-Not: Charmian Hughes.
London comedian Charmian Hughes loves New Zealand so much she is back at the NZ Fringe in Wellington for a third visit with a new show CHARMIAN HUGHES: WHAT-NOT.
Self-identity is the buzz word- we all want our concept of ourselves to be recognised by society. We’ve never been so free to become who we were always meant to be. Or been so inquisitive about how other people define themselves.
But some of us never knew who we were in the first place- so have no idea where we’re going. We are the what-nots, and in this new show, comedian Charmian is throwing out a lifeline to the lost and confused.
Charmian says ‘My whole life has been a muddle of cross identification. Through a series of accidents and coincidences, I was born German to an English family, brought up Catholic when they were Protestant and was an only child yet had five siblings. If that sounds like the clue to the riddle ‘What am I?’, the answer is ‘what-not’ and I am reclaiming that word as a proud identity.’
Charmian’s had a busy year since her last visit. ‘I reached the grand final of the Petworth UK Comedian of The Year competition’ she says. ‘There were 700 entrants and I was in the last 8! I was so pleased to get to the final at the age of 62. The winner was 22!’
Charmian also spent a month at the Edinburgh Fringe and continued to do stand-up comedy around the country.
She is very excited to be back in New Zealand. ‘I hope I get to Milford Sound this time!’ she says ‘Last year I tried, but the bus forgot to pick me up and I spent the day sitting on the beach in Queenstown being attacked by a duck. But it was a New Zealand duck so it was exotic’.
‘A class above other stand-ups-a great entertainer not to be missed’ Dominion Post
‘Funny and profound’ Theatreview.
‘Charming ribaldry’ The Guardian
'A captivating storyteller and irresistible performer' The Scotsman.
