MEDIA RELEASE: SEPTEMBER 3, 2018
When six-year-old Florence arrives in New Zealand, she struggles to adjust to life in a land where there’s no congee for
breakfast and a home where Dad is always distracted.
Every year, more than 100,000 new migrants arrive to begin new lives in Aotearoa New Zealand, and all experience high
expectations and multiple challenges.
In Foodie, a short film released today, we share a child’s view of adjusting to life in another country – and the way in which
food can be instrumental in bridging cultural differences and building friendships.
Foodie is based on the real-life story of film producer Florence Lam whose family moved to Auckland from Hong Kong in the
’90s. It is a Someday Story, a sustainability-focused short film by young New Zealand film-makers.
From September 3, you can watch Foodie online:
Someday Stories are produced by Connected Media with support from NZ On Air, The Body Shop, Te Māngai Pāho and the New
Zealand Film Commission, in association with Stuff, Māori Television On Demand, The Wireless, and the coconet.tv.
