First Women's Boxing Tournament in New Zealand
Craig Thomson of CTP Boxing has just announced that he will be promoting the first 8 women heavyweight tournament in New Zealand Boxing history. After a very successful 8 man middleweight tournament in April, he has decided to do another “Dare to be Great” Tournament on October 6th in Auckland New Zealand, but this time with Heavyweight Women.
Craig Thomson who has been matchmaking and promoting in New Zealand for over 13 years, wanted to change up the New Zealand boxing scene with boxing tournaments. He stated...
“After the success of the inaugural auckland 8 we really wanted to do it again but give the women a chance to show what they are capable of. Womens boxing has grown massively over the past few years especially in the heavyweight division where we will afford the winner a chance to be a mandatory Challenger to a major world title. This will be history in the making and we encourage fight fans to support our women professional boxers in October”
Women Heavyweight boxing has been booming in New Zealand since 2016 when Nailini Helu made her debut on the Kali Reis vs Maricela Cornejo WBC World title undercard. Since then, New Zealand has had multiple female heavyweight boxers in the top 10 in the rankings, however none gaining a world title yet.
This tournament is part of a plan to give boxers a chance to battle for a world title within the next 12 months. The aim of the tournament is also to promote women boxing and New Zealand boxers to the world.
Currently Craig Thomson is in Negotiations with NZPBA Heavyweight Champion, current WBA ranked 9th and former ranked 4th on Boxrec Alrie Meleisea. He is also in Negotiations with highly experience amateur boxer Caroline Daniels. Other potential names that is rumoured flying around including former top 10 boxrec boxer Nailini Helu, MMA fighter Gina Kolo, MMA fighter Renata “razzie” Poa and more. Thomson is still looking for fighters interest but it is an open invitation to any boxer over 79.4 kgs/175 Ibs.
