SIT Graduate Maira Muller’s Live Stream Performance Exhibition

Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) graduate Maira Muller is exploring drawing as performance in a live stream exhibition taking place across two venues. City Gallery in Invercargill is displaying the collection of drawings Muller has produced throughout 2017 and at SIT’s Downtown campus on Don Street, the Raw gallery area is live streaming on their window, the artist drawing from her studio in Wellington. This broadcast is via YouTube and the durational drawing performance is available for anyone, anywhere in the world to see.

Maira’s work explores the relation between drawing and performance, movement and inertia. Her drawings incorporate time as well as space – a fictional and experiential place that only emerges bit by bit.

Currently living and working in Wellington, she completed her degree in Visual Arts at Southern Institute of Technology and was the 2016 winner of the Southsure Emerging Artist Awards. In 2017 she has performed her work at the Kiwi Art House Gallery in Wellington, at the Park(ing) Day event on Cuba Street, Wellington, and has also showcased her first work on canvas at the ILT Awards 2017.

Currently on the ninth day of the two week streaming performance, Muller displays an exciting merging of the use of performance, drawing and technology in contemporary art.

Her statement on ‘Chaos and Progress’ explains it as “a series of drawings I’ve been working on this year as I continue to reflect on my own experience of displacement, loss of identity and belonging. I have spent the year questioning and exploring the nature of the drawings while experimenting with different mediums and surfaces in search of an answer”.
