FASHION BASED COMEDY ON TREND
This NZ Fringe, fashion, millennials and selfie culture are set to be skewered in TWO GIRLS ONE SHOP.
This fast-paced theatrical comedy is written and performed by Maddie Harris and Millie Hanford, both recent alumni of the Court Theatre Youth Company, in Christchurch. “We’re both part of this quite shallow youth culture, which we love, but also is gross. It’s conflicting.” says Maddie. “Is it any wonder I can never decide what to wear?” adds Millie.
The comedic duo play two vacuous clothing shop assistants who are less interested in helping their customers and more into debating whether or not a tapeworm is a viable weight loss option and if you can just make one by putting sellotape on an earthworm. Through their multiple “filosophical” discussions the pair slowly discover the destructive nature of their relationship and the co-dependency of being BFF’s - Best Frenemies Forever. “We’ve been friends since we were ten. Most of the scenes are just based on conversations we’ve had. Is that embarrassing?” says Millie.
These two unlikely ingenues are joined in the production by veteran playwright and director Dan Bain. Dan is the Artistic Director of the Court Jesters and responsible for Scared Scriptless, New Zealand’s longest running late night comedy show. Dan has been offering dramaturgical support through the development of the material and directs the show. “They are a comedic voice that I hadn’t been exposed to before; young, female, sly, incisive and borderline obscene. Working with them has been an education. A horrifying education.” says Dan.
TWO GIRLS ONE SHOP is touring to Wellington from Christchurch for the NZ Fringe and is the first leg of a mini tour that will also include seasons in Christchurch and at the Dunedin Fringe. It is on at BATS Theatre at 9pm From Thursday 23rd of February until Tuesday 28th, no show Saturday. Tickets are $18 full and $14 concession, book at bats.co.nz or on (04) 802 4175.
