Crowd will get a unique say in what comedy comes to Christchurch city in The Go Media Comedy Carnival
START:
Promoters of The Go Media Comedy Carnival, Snap RuseWebsites and Hannah McKenzie are bringing the festival back to Christchurch in an innovative new format.
Through using SuchCrowd - a startup born out of Christchurch’s first Lightning Lab Accelerator - the promoters are enabling the Christchurch community to choose what comedians they want to see perform.
‘Normally festivals review submissions and make the decision about who performs behind closed doors’ Snap explains ‘this didn’t make sense to us - if people want to see a comedian that comedian should get to perform, using SuchCrowd will enable the crowd to decide rather than us’.
SuchCrowd is a crowdsourcing platform made specifically for events - you set a minimum ticket sale target and if reached - the event goes ahead. Since launching out of Christchurch the online platform has run over 100 events and boosts an 81% success rate.
‘We’re looking forward to having The Go Media Comedy Carnival on the platform’ CEO Abbe Hyde says ‘Snap was one of the first people we met when we moved to Christchurch to participate in Lightning Lab - he’s the ideal example of our customers - giving artists opportunities and building a community around novel events. The Christchurch community will have a say in exactly what their Comedy Carnival looks like which is a world first’.
Snap hopes the system will give more opportunities to comedians and simultaneously increase awareness for the festival. ‘At the end of the day our comedians need healthy sized audiences - we look forward to enabling them to reach their numbers - comedy is just better when the room is filled’. Snap also notes that this comedy festival features comedians from the South Island ‘its an important event for these comedians - an awesome performing opportunity’.
Events will go live in stages on SuchCrowd and event goers will be able to vote through ticket purchases for the acts they want to see. If the event doesn’t reach the needed numbers the promoters will be able to accommodate different arrangements or refund tickets on a case by case basis. ‘If there’s a comedian that you think deserves a bigger venue make sure you spread the word’ says Snap.
