Dunedin Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Dvorak’s New World’ : Saturday 10
September, 7.30pm, Dunedin Town Hall
This concert’s artists have been linked inextricably to the orchestra’s history. Nicholas Braithwaite first conducted the orchestra in 1992, and he has contributed significantly to the orchestra’s artistic development, especially during his ten years (1997 – 2006) as Principal Guest Conductor. Pianist Michael Houstoun is an Otago University graduate whose connection with the orchestra goes back 40 years, to his first concert with us in 1976.
Opening the concert is a work by the late Jack Speirs, acknowledging his considerable contribution to the orchestra, especially as its Music Director from 1974 to 1989.
Dvorak’s exuberant and popular ‘From the New World’ symphony and Bartok’s third piano concerto are both infused and invigorated by folk music elements from their native countries – Czechoslovakia and Hungary respectively.
