Smartphone Documentary To Reveal True Face Of Kiwi Teens
Zeal today announces an open casting call for a feature length documentary on kiwi teenagers.
Titled My Weekend, the documentary will involve young people from all over Aotearoa capturing the story of their weekend as it unfolds,
from their own perspective.
Filming will take place on smartphones, making My Weekend New Zealand’s first feature length film shot using such technology. Nine out of ten young New Zealanders now own or
have access to a smartphone (Research New Zealand, 2015).
“Teenagers are spoken to, but often don’t have a chance to speak to the wider world,” says documentary director Brooke Benton.
“My Weekend hands the camera and the voice to young people, offering Aotearoa first-hand insight into their family, friends,
thoughts and experiences.”
Young people aged 15-17, from all over New Zealand, are now eligible to apply at http://www.zeal.nz/myweekend. In line with the documentary concept, young people apply by submitting a two minute video of themselves.
Applications close Midnight, Sunday 6 September.
Successful applicants will be brought to Auckland for a weekend of workshops, then armed with a smartphone, and coached
through filming their life over a series of weekends. Then their lives, as they’ve filmed it, will be released in
documentary format in 2016.
My Weekend is a production of the youth organisation Zeal, through its youth issues arm Live For Tomorrow. Known as the home of young creatives, Zeal has creative arts youth facilities around the country.
Live For Tomorrow was a finalist in the 2015 #SMCAKLS (NZ Social Media Awards) and partnered with Smashproof, Pieter T & directorChris Graham on the “Survivors” music video, which won Best Video at the Pacific Music Awards 2015.
Documentary production will be supported by a youth advisory group at Zeal West Auckland.
