Remuera Gallery presents our annual exhibition with artists Ron Stenberg and Don Lever.
Ron Stenberg was born in Auckland in 1919 and at age twelve was accepted into Elam School of Art in recognition of his
exceptional artistic ability. He later became the Senior Lecturer and Head of Department at the Duncan of Jordanstone
College of Art in Dundee, was a council member of the Auckland Society of Arts, painter for the Black Watch Battalion
during their last days in Germany; and also boasts a painting in the Queen’s private collection in Britain. Now in his
96th year, Stenberg’s Something Old, Something New; presents a collection of works ranging from former years lecturing in Dundee to his latest paintings from his home
studio in Birkenhead, Auckland.
Born in 1930, Don Lever attended Elam School of Art at the age of fourteen. There he was tutored by John Weeks, Archie
Fisher, Lois White and Ida Eise. It was this early influence of John Weeks, along with his association with Stenberg,
that gave Lever a special awareness of colour, light and form. After having enjoyed a 40 year career in advertising and
graphic design, Lever now paints from his home in Waitakere. Lever’s latest body of work Nga puaawai o te Waitakere (Native Flowers of Waitakere) brings our attention to the artists interaction to his direct environment in Waitakere
through a study of the flora in the area.
