New Zealand is our place to volunteer
National Volunteer Week (NVW) (21 – 27 June) is in full swing as we celebrate volunteers and the place volunteering has in Aotearoa New Zealand’s communities.
Kiwi’s have always had strong and proud tradition of volunteering.
Recent research indicates almost 50 per cent of the Waikato working population, 40 per cent of the Canterbury work force and 38 per cent of working Wellingtonians have been or are currently, volunteering.
Volunteering New Zealand (VNZ), Chief Executive, Scott Miller is encouraging New Zealanders to celebrate, appreciate and encourage past, present and future volunteers during this special week.
“NVW is a unique time to thank each and every volunteer in New Zealand for their time and energy,” says Mr Miller.
This year’s theme, chosen by Volunteering New Zealand (VNZ), is “he wahi mohou hei tuao” translated as “There is a place for you to volunteer”
2015’s theme illuminates the variety within the volunteering landscape, what volunteering means to an individual or community, and that there is a place for all volunteers in New Zealand.”
“This recent data reflects the generosity of spirit that seems to naturally lead Kiwis to volunteer.
NVW is also an opportunity for those who have volunteered to tell the rest of New Zealand about their volunteer experience as we work toward 100 per cent of the population getting involved”
We want to see everyone benefit personally, socially and economically, says Miller.
VNZ wants to also note its appreciation of the Government’s Support for Volunteering Fund, for continuing to support Volunteering New Zealand in promoting, supporting and advocating for volunteers and volunteer involving organisations in New Zealand.
