Nelson musicians play for fellow muso's cancer treatment
A line up of Nelson’s best musicians is getting behind fellow muso Suzi Fray in a fundraising variety concert to support
her overseas cancer treatment.
The lead singer of Johnny Cash tribute band, The Johnnys, was diagnosed just weeks ago with a rare form of uterine
cancer and is out to raise $80,000 for treatment in a German clinic.
Concert organiser Pete Rainey said the Nelson musical community wanted to help and was doing what it did best – play
music.
"It's all falling together really well and we've had a lot of really generous support from the Theatre Royal, musicians
and people involved in promotion. It shows a clear indication of how this community feels about Suzi,” he said. “We’re
in for a fantastic night of music from gypsy jazz to funk, rock and folk and there will be some great opportunities to
win on the night so we’re telling people to bring plenty of cash.”
The line up includes Rainey’s own gypsy swing band Django Schmango, and the Mojo Funk Orchestra where he plays trumpet.
In a surprise turn of events Fray’s own band, The Johnnys, will do a short set, as her departure for Germany has been
delayed until the Saturday after the concert.
Other performers who are giving their time and talent to Songs for Suzi are Ryan Behre in Funk'nslocuts, local rock
outfit The Immigrants, Marc Steyn and Dayna Saniveri.
Songs for Suzi is at the Theatre Royal, at 8pm on Friday May 15, doors open 7pm. Tickets on sale Friday, $20 unwaged,
