The Auckland Festival of Photography Congratulates Anne Noble Winner the 31st Higashikawa Overseas Photographer Award
One of New Zealand’s most respected photographers, Anne Noble has won the Overseas Photographer Award in the 31st Higashikawa Awards.
Anne Noble is Professor of Fine Arts (Photography) at Massey University Wellington, and was awarded an Arts Foundation Laureate award in 2009 and a Senior Fulbright Scholarship last year.
The Higashikawa Overseas Photographer Award recognises photographic achievement, with Anne Noble chosen after jury member Aki Kusumoto conducted research in Auckland and Wellington considering the work of 13 New Zealand important photographers nominated by the Auckland Festival of Photography.
Anne Noble was chosen by an overwhelming majority of the jury members for her well known, vivid and compelling images, including work on the theme of Antarctica, a series of photographs of her daughter’s mouth, and other work dealing with contemporary issues including sexuality, representation and our relationship with nature.
The importance of our relationship to the natural world is evident in Anne Noble’s forthcoming exhibition, No Vertical Song (Two Rooms Gallery,29 May – 4 July), one of the highlights in this year’s 2015 Auckland Festival of Photography (28 May – 20 June). No Vertical Song features Noble’s “the dead bee portraits” series, images taken using a scanning electron microscope, with the photographs installed as if in an imaginary museum of the bee in a time when the insect no longer exists.
