Cats ‘n Dogs – An Illustrated History
Dunedin (Friday, 30 January 2014) – Toitū Otago Settlers Museum is calling for your favourite cat and dog images to be part of a
new exhibition.
‘Cats ‘n Dogs – An Illustrated History’ will explore the social history of dogs and cats in Dunedin primarily using
images from Toitū OSM’s archives.
“The idea for the exhibition started from our archives as often when exploring our images we find cats or dogs present
in many photos. They are interwoven into everyday life then and now,” says Exhibition Developer, William McKee.
The exhibition will showcase, through photographs, the evolving role of these four legged creatures over time, as well
as examining the environmental impacts of them on our community. New Zealand environmentalists, including outspoken
philanthropist Gareth Morgan, will give their views on future cat and dog control.
Mr McKee says, “The exhibition will particularly cover the role canine and feline friends have played in Dunedin - from
their evolution as working animals to the companionship and bonds formed between them and humans.”
As part of the exhibition Toitū OSM is asking the community to send in images of their pets from 26 January-1 August
2015. Selected photos from those submitted will then be chosen to be incorporated into the exhibition.
“We are making it a bit more of a fun exhibition and we want the community to be part of it by showcasing the paw marks
these creatures have left on our lives and city,” says Mr McKee.
