Elam celebrates contemporary printmaking
A celebration of the art of contemporary printmaking will take place at the University of Auckland next month with dozens of artists from around the world heading to Auckland to take part over summer.
The Elam International Printmaking Workshop (EIPW 2015) is a two-week live studio project that will feature international artists and Elam School of Fine Arts staff and students working side-by-side at Elam, exploring the latest directions in contemporary printmaking. The medium, which is continuing to develop new forms, is one of the fastest growing areas of fine arts.
Organised by Associate Professor Derrick Cherrie, Head of Elam School of Fine Arts and Associate Professor Nuala Gregory, Deputy Dean of the National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries (NICAI), the workshop will conclude with a major exhibition of contemporary print at the Gus Fisher Gallery.
”Printmaking has a long and venerable tradition that continues to evolve in the digital age. This workshop and exhibition is a timely reminder of the medium’s unique properties – its reproducibility, collaborative nature, and democratic reach – which is ensuring printmaking’s popularity with a whole new generation of artists,” says Associate Professor Derrick Cherrie.
During EIPW 2015 artists will be assigned a space at Elam, according to their preferred print medium. Elam postgraduate students will also take part, working with participating artists as part of the NICAI summer scholarship scheme.
Confirmed participating artists include:
Professor Yang Feng, X’ian Academy of Fine Arts, China.
Professor Katy Couprie, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.
