Howzat for an Adult Summer Reading Challenge?

Dunedin, 1 December 2014 – As excitement mounts for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, Dunedin Public Libraries are celebrating Dunedin’s host status with a new summer challenge.

“When I heard this huge sporting event was coming to Dunedin, I was curious to see if we could build an adult summer reading programme around the rules of cricket,” says Libraries Events Co-ordinator Kay Mercer. “We run a children’s summer reading programme every year and I thought why should the kids have all the fun?”

‘Read for a Century’ challenges Library customers to read 18 books over the summer and write a review of their favourites.

“The challenge is loosely based on one day international rules, which have six balls an over”, says Mrs Mercer. “You score a four for each book you read and a review scores you a six.”

Keen readers build up points throughout the summer with prizes for anyone reaching a century. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 has donated a family guest pass to the New Zealand v Scotland game for the winner drawn from those with the overall highest scores.

“Our customers like to read books other readers have recommended, so this is a great way for people to discover new books by reading reviews from fellow customers,” Mrs Mercer says.

People will be able to follow the progress of the challenge over the summer by checking the Libraries’ Facebook and Twitter pages and by visiting their local Dunedin Public Library, where review cards will be displayed.

Pick up a ‘Read for a Century’ scorecard from any Dunedin Public Library and step up to the crease for your innings. The challenge is underway now and runs until 10 February 2015.
