New public panel to advise Auckland Council on public art
Auckland’s industry leaders in arts, culture and design are being given the opportunity by Auckland Council to help
shape art in public spaces to help the council achieve its goal of becoming the world’s most liveable city.
They’re being invited to apply to be on a new public panel that will advise on public art in Auckland.
This is the first advisory panel for arts and culture set up since the council’s amalgamation and replaces the former
Auckland City Council’s Advisory Panel for Public Art that was disbanded last year.
Auckland Council Arts, Culture and Events Committee Chair Cr. Alf Filipaina says the former panel did a great job but
it’s time to grow up the advisory role to align with a new public art policy which encompasses the many forms of
artistic expression in Auckland’s public places.
“We’ve spent time identifying the skill sets required and re-writing the terms of reference for an expert advisory panel
to help us build the world’s most liveable city through a wide range of creative practices,” he says.
“The most significant change is the panel will offer advice for the Community Development Arts and Culture Unit’s arts
and culture activities as a whole, whenever they appear or affect Auckland’s public places.”
The change in emphasis will enable staff to draw on the expertise of the panel for a wider range of activities.
Cr. Filipaina says the panel will have between seven and nine members and be industry leaders in a balanced array of
arts, culture and design fields, including some with significant expertise in Nga Mahi Toi. The panel will meet up to
five times per year and besides local knowledge, they will have a global perspective on the role creativity plays in
creating a great, liveable city.
